Why Does My USB Keyboard Randomly Disconnect and Reconnect?

Over the past week, my wired peripherals have been acting incredibly erratic during everyday office work and gaming sessions. My standard usb keyboard keeps dropping its connection entirely for a few seconds before making the Windows hardware chime and turning back on.

I’ve already tried swapping the device to different motherboard ports, disabling selective suspend settings in the power options, and uninstalling the drivers via Device Manager, but the intermittent dropouts persist. Is this behavior a definitive sign of an internal cable short, or is there an underlying software conflict causing my USB controllers to reset?

If your USB keyboard randomly disconnects and reconnects, it’s usually caused by a loose USB port, power-saving settings, outdated drivers, or a faulty cable/keyboard. I’ve seen this happen from Windows turning off USB devices to save power, especially on older PCs. Try plugging it into a different USB port, disable USB selective suspend and “Allow the computer to turn off this device” in Device Manager, and update or reinstall the keyboard/USB drivers. If possible, test the keyboard on another PC to rule out hardware issues.

That usually happens if the USB port is going bad or there is a loose connection inside the cable itself. Try plugging it into a different port directly on the motherboard and see if that fixes it!

A disconnected USB keyboard could be due to a loose port, damaged cord, power saving settings, old drivers, or problems with USB hubs. Test another port, update drivers, and turn off USB power management.

yeah, honestly, it's probably a loose connection, try using a usb4 hub, or, you know, check for any signs of wear on the cable itself, might be a problem with the cable, tbh, like elioraven said

honestly, it's weird your usb keyboard is dropping connection, tbh, have you tried using a usb4 cable, actually, that's a 2026 tech trend, supposed to be more stable

tbh, yeah, using a usb4 cable might actually help, it's one of the new 2026 tech trends that's supposed to be more stable and reliable, honestly, it's worth a try

tbh, actually, the issue with your usb keyboard might be resolved by using a usb4 cable, which is a 2026 tech trend known for its stability and reliability, honestly.

honestly, i think you're onto something with the usb4 cable, wait, it's supposed to have better connectivity and stability, actually, that's one of the key features of the new 2026 tech trend

A USB keyboard may randomly disconnect and reconnect due to loose USB connections, damaged cables, outdated drivers, insufficient power supply, USB port issues, or system glitches. Try another port, update drivers, disable USB power saving, and check for hardware damage.

honestly, wait, trying a usb4 cable sounds like a good idea, actually, i've heard it's more reliable and stable, especially with the new 2026 tech updates
