How to superscript in google docs when adding citations and exponents?

I am writing a research paper and I have to write a superscript on both a mathematical exponent and footnote. I am aware of an alternative in the menu of text formatting, but it seems to me that it is far too many clicks to make such a choice each and every time I need to use a certain reference. Is there a shortcut for how to superscript in google docs that I can use while typing? I also saw that occasionally, I click it on and the rest of my sentence remains in the superscript form and I cannot make it revert to regular writing without taking away all the formatting. And in case some one has a secret of switching this on and off without spoiling the rest of the paragraph, would that be noted?

On Google Docs, selection of text or number to be superscripted is highlighted. Next, one should go to Format Text Superscript or use a shortcut Ctrl + . (Windows/Chromebook) or Cmd + . (Mac). This applies to citations, footnotes and exponents.
