What Does the Green Dot Mean on Snapchat?

I have recently noticed that there is a tiny green whitespot beside the names of some of my friends on Snapchat. I am not very sure what it really means. Is it to show that they are online currently or is it to do with something else such as their being active? I have attempted to look at the settings of the app and could not see a clear explanation. Do you see this, has anybody, and is it really what the green dot of Snapchat represents?
