During a gaming session, I faced criticism for using guides, can someone clarify what is meta gaming and where the limits are?

Meta gaming is a term that refers to a player relying on information that their character should not have known in the game world, that is, the knowledge outside the game, the guides, or the details of the event yet to occur, to be able to play or role-play and win at the game. It is considered to destroy the immersion and the fairness of the game.

Meta gaming occurs when a participant makes use of external information (guides, forums, or prior match experience) to achieve an advantage that would not have been realistic in the game itself through his or her character.

Meta gaming is when a player uses outside or real-world knowledge (not available to their character) to gain an advantage inside a game—especially in role-playing games.

Meta gaming is basically using information your character shouldn’t logically have. In role-play games, that can break immersion. In competitive or casual games, though, it’s usually expected. Context matters more than the act itself.

The game beyond the game is called metagaming. It refers to playing with the Most Effective Tactics Available (META) to win in competitive titles. It involves applying out-of-character knowledge, or information that your character is not aware of, in making your in-game decisions, in role-playing games.

Meta gaming is when you use outside info like guides or player knowledge that your character wouldn’t realistically know. It’s usually fine for learning mechanics, but it crosses a line when it breaks immersion or gives your character unfair in-world knowledge (honestly, we’ve all done it a bit 😅).

Meta gaming refers to strategies or decisions in a game that go beyond the immediate rules or story, often using outside knowledge, player behavior, or game mechanics to gain an advantage. It can involve predicting opponents, exploiting patterns, or optimizing play based on external information rather than in-game context.

Meta gaming is when a player uses out-of-game knowledge (like guides, stats, or other players’ info) to make in-game decisions that their character wouldn’t realistically know.

Meta gaming is when a player uses information from outside the game—such as player knowledge, forums, or prior experience—to make in-game decisions that their character would not realistically know.

Meta gaming is described as the application of out of game information in order to understand the gaming environment to benefit one inside the game, as common in role-playing and multiplayer gaming groups.

Meta Gaming refers to using game knowledge that exists outside the game itself—such as guides, statistics, patches, or common strategies to gain an advantage in gameplay.

Meta gaming is the utilization of external game information to apply it into a game. This involves cheating via gameplay, tactics, numerical data or by using the information of the character that is not accessible to the player. It is usual in competitive games, role-playing games, and even online multiplayer games to have an advantage.
