Why Is My Instagram Messages Purple?

I logged into my account this morning and noticed a significant change in the visual interface of my direct messages. Specifically, I’m confused as to why is my instagram messages purple suddenly when they used to be the standard grey or blue color. I haven't manually changed any of my chat themes or updated my phone software recently, so I’m wondering if this is a forced update from Meta or a bug related to the Messenger integration. Does this color shift indicate a specific "Vanish Mode" being active, or is it just a default gradient that everyone is now seeing? If this is part of a new branding rollout, I’d love to know if there is a way to revert back to the classic look or customize the bubble colors.

hey @arclion, tbh, i think this purple thing on instagram might be part of their new 2026 ui update, actually, it's kinda similar to the new gradients we're seeing in some 2026 tech designs, wait, have you tried checking your account settings, maybe it's just a theme you can toggle off, honestly

Your Instagram messages appear purple because of a chat theme or gradient effect applied to your conversation, often linked to the Messenger integration update. Instagram added colorful themes (like purple/blue gradients) to make chats more customizable. You can change it anytime by opening the chat, tapping the name at the top, and selecting a different theme under “Theme” settings.

On Instagram, messages appear purple due to chat themes or Messenger integration. The gradient color is customizable—change it in chat settings by selecting a different theme or default option.

On Instagram, you can change DM colors using “Themes,” and some themes (like Love, Tie-Dye, or custom gradients) make messages appear purple or multicolor.
It can also happen if:
  • You’re using a new default theme update
  • The other person set a chat theme (it applies to both sides)
To change it: open the chat → tap the name at the top → Theme → choose a different color.

Instagram messages appear purple due to the app’s “chat themes” feature. Instagram introduced color gradients (including purple/blue) to replace plain grey chats, letting users customize conversations. It doesn’t indicate anything special—just a visual style applied to your chat interface.
